The House That Built Me by Lambert Miranda

The House That Built Me by Lambert Miranda

Miranda Lambert and The House That Built Me big winners at ACM Awards (April 4th, 2011)

On Sunday afternoon, Miranda Lambert tweeted that she was getting ready for the red carpet and was excited about seeing her fiance host the ACM Awards with Reba. However, once the show got underway, Miranda didn't get to sit in her seat and admire Blake Shelton for long. Between wowing the crowd with her vocal talents and making her way up to the stage several times to collect awards, Miranda had quite a busy evening.

If Miranda did get to steal a moment away with Blake though, it's quite possible she was thanking him, once again, for passing on recording the song, The House That Built Me. When The House That Built Me stirred up strong emotions over Miranda's own childhood story of temporary homelessness, the pair knew she was the artist to record it. As it turns out, it was probably one of the best decisions she ever made.

Earlier this year, Miranda won a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance on The House That Built Me. Prior to the Grammys, the song had already won Song of the Year from MusicRow and Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year from the CMAs. As the Las Vegas show wrapped up on Sunday evening, Song of the Year, Single Record of the Year and Video of the Year were added by the ACMs as well. In addition, Miranda walked away with the award for Top Female Vocalist of the Year.

For St. Louis fans of Miranda Lambert, the ACM Awards victories were sweet. Not only are Miranda's songs fresh on the minds and hearts of those who attended her amazing concert here in February, many here can identify with the song, The House That Built Me. St. Louisans, for the most part, are not among the wealthiest of the nation. Many of us have lived fairly simple lives, growing up in some of the older neighborhoods around the city. When Miranda Lambert singsThe House That Built Me, it's easy to envision our own childhood homes, the handprints on the front porch, the favorite dog buried in the yard, a little room at the top of the stairs where we did our homework. And when Miranda paints the picture of a mother dreaming of a house that she could really make into a home, we can relate to the father who worked to make that dream a reality.

There is such a simplicity and sweetness in this song. It conjures up memories of grandmothers' stories of coming to St. Louis in the early 1900's, of sewing curtains and planting flowers, of trying to take care of a growing family despite economic odds. It reminds us of playing hide and seek, sticky popsicles melting on our chins, hot summers and the little house that all those memories lead back to. It may be only a few minutes to a radio deejay, but every time that song is played on WILor The Bull, many St. Louisans are transported back to another time, "living" out a whole lifetime of memories before the music fades.Given her own history and the means by which she came across the song, Miranda Lambert is sure to feel deeply rewarded that this particular song has done so well. Hopefully, it will inspire her to bring even more of her sensitive side to the recording studio, because as the success of The House That Built Me has proven, Miranda doesn't have to be "tough" all the time. It's been wonderful to see another side of this beautiful artist and to see her rewarded for stepping out in a different direction.Oh sure, we'll still rock with her when she wants to sing about guns and guys and drinking, but for now, we'll enjoy the celebration of a song that has touched so many hearts and brought back such sweet memories.Congratulations, Miranda, on your four ACMs, and on the outstanding year you've had!

"The House That Built Me" is a song written by Tom Douglas and Allen Shamblin, and recorded by American country artist Miranda Lambert. It was released in March 2010 as the third single from her third studio album, Revolution. It is the fastest-rising single of her career, reaching the Top 20 in its eighth week. For the chart week of June 12, 2010, the song became Lambert's first Number One hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, and held its place at the top for four consecutive weeks. Additionally, it was her second single to receive a platinum certification from the RIAA on July 8, 2010.

Lambert performed the song during the 2010 Academy of Country Music Awards on April 18, 2010, and received a standing ovation. At the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards on February 13, 2011, she won a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for "The House That Built Me."

"The House That Built Me" is a country ballad, driven primarily by acoustic guitar with steel guitar fills. The song's female narrator describes returning, as an adult, to the house that she grew up in, and asking the person who now lives in the house if she could step inside and take a look around. She refers to it as "the house that built [her]," because of all the memories that she had of growing up within its walls. It is also Miranda's first single of her career that she did not have a hand in writing.

Allen Shamblin based the song of his experience of going back to the house in Huffman, Texas that he grew up in at least once a year.

The House That Built Me by Lambert Miranda
Lambert Miranda

I know they say, you can’t go home again
I just had to come back one last time
Ma’am, I know you don’t know me from Adam
But these handprints on the front steps are mine
Up those stairs in that little back bedroom
Is where I did my homework and I learned to play guitar
I bet you didn’t know under that live oak
My favorite dog is buried in the yard

I thought if I could touch this place or feel it
This brokenness inside me might start healing
Out here it’s like I’m someone else
I thought that maybe I could find myself
If I could just come in I swear I’ll leave
Won’t take nothing but a memory
From the house that built me

Mama cut out pictures of houses for years
From "Better Homes and Gardens" magazine
Plans were drawn and concrete poured
Nail by nail and board by board
Daddy gave life to mama’s dream

I thought if I could touch this place or feel it
This brokenness inside me might start healing
Out here it’s like I’m someone else
I thought that maybe I could find myself
If I could just come in I swear I’ll leave
Won’t take nothing but a memory
From the house that built me

You leave home and you move on and you do the best you can
I got lost in this old world and forgot
Who I am

I thought if I could touch this place or feel it
This brokenness inside me might start healing
Out here it’s like I’m someone else
I thought that maybe I could find myself
If I could walk around I swear I’ll leave
Won’t take nothing but a memory
From the house that built me
